On Feb. 21, ahead of the 2021 Golden Globes, theLos Angeles Timesreleased a two-part exposé revealingthat the Hollywood Foreign Press Association "had no Black members,所以他们的sed of ethical lapses." In response, the HFPA released a statement on Feb. 26 saying, "We understand that we needto bring in Black members, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible." Time's Up followed their comment by tweeting Friday, "A cosmetic fix isn't enough. #TIMESUPGlobes #TIMESUP," along with a photo that called out that there is "not a single Black member out of 87." They also took out a full-page ad in theLos Angeles Timeson Sunday to point out the organization's lack of diversity.

Celebrities were quick to follow the lead of Time's Up, posting their thoughts and feelings of solidarity on Instagram and Twitter. "To be clear, pressure applied to the Globes and its partners from now on isn't about validation or shiny things from this particular group," tweeted directorAva DuVernay. "Flagrant and unacceptable. It's a wrap on all of this," added Natasha Lyonne. The HFPA also addressed the controversy during the ceremony, with Twitterimmediately dragging themfor a perceived lack of sincerity. "Tonight, while we celebrate the work of artists from around the globe, we recognize that we have our own work to do. Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization," said HFPA member Helen Hoehne. "That means creating an environment where diverse membership is the norm, not the exception. Thank you and we look forward to a more inclusive future," added HFPA president Ali Sar.
